What is EQ, and why did we build Brambin EQ?
Welcome. If this is the first thing you are reading about Brambin EQ, start here. This short post explains what emotional intelligence is, how we think about it inside the app, and what you should and should not expect from a self-assessment like ours.
What emotional intelligence actually means
Emotional intelligence — often shortened to EQ — is the cluster of skills we use to notice what we are feeling, to sit with that feeling instead of being pushed around by it, and to understand how other people are feeling in the room with us. It is less a fixed trait than a set of habits: a way of paying attention.
The framework most people recognise comes from psychologist Daniel Goleman, who grouped these habits into five dimensions. Brambin EQ is built around those same five:
- Self-awareness. The ability to notice your own emotions as they are happening, and to know what tends to set them off.
- Self-regulation. The space between a feeling and a reaction — the pause that lets you choose how to respond.
- Motivation. The quieter kind that comes from within: persistence, purpose, the reason you keep going when nobody is watching.
- Empathy. Reading the emotional weather of the people around you, even when nothing has been said aloud.
- Social skills. How you build and maintain relationships across the different rooms of your life.
These are not abstract. They show up in how you handle a difficult email, how you sit with disappointment, how you notice that a friend is quiet in a way that is not their usual quiet.
Why we built Brambin EQ
Most of the emotional-intelligence "tests" you can find online are thirty seconds of word association and a vague label at the end. We wanted something more honest. Brambin EQ asks you forty-four scenario-based questions — situations you have almost certainly faced — and maps your answers across the five dimensions. You get a calibrated score on a bell curve, a radar chart of your profile, and a short written read on where you are strong and where there is room to grow.
We also wanted the app to feel quiet. No timer, no push notifications, no badges to collect. Self-reflection should not feel like a game show.
What Brambin EQ is not
This part matters.
Brambin EQ is a self-reflection tool. It is not a medical, psychological, or diagnostic instrument. Your score is not a verdict on your worth, your career, or your relationships. It is a snapshot — one particular lens, on one particular day, of how you answered forty-four questions.
We do not promise that the app will make you more emotionally intelligent. Growth in this area comes from the slow work of noticing, naming, and choosing differently over time. What the app can do is give you a vocabulary for that work, and a starting point.
What to read next
Over the coming weeks we will publish longer pieces on each of the five dimensions, on the personality archetypes the app uses, and on what modern psychology actually says about whether EQ can be developed. If a specific dimension pulled your eye when you read the list above, that is a good one to start with.
Thanks for being here. Download the app, take the preview, or just sit with the list of five for a minute. That counts too.
Brambin EQ is a self-reflection and entertainment tool. It is not a medical, psychological, or diagnostic instrument, does not treat any condition, and does not replace the advice of a qualified professional.
